TAKE NOTE GUYS THIS IS ONLY THE SECOND PAGE
FOURTH COMMANDMENT
Exodus 20:12- expresses the truth that we are born into a society of persons. The Decalogue was given to adults and children alike, not an instruction for individuals or for children to obey their parents, but to the whole of Israel as a clan or family.
Therefore:
1. Honor is given not only to one's parents but also to the "elders" of the clan in general.
2. Not only to obey but to honor which calls for all forms of respect
3. Obligation of grown children to take of their aged parents: Sirach 3:12ff
4. Human life and parents are not to be evaluated in terms of productivity.
5. Respect for aged parents is a necessary virtue not just for the individual families but also for the community as well.
6. Both parents are to receive equal respect. Exodus 20:12, Leviticus 19:3 (create a balance), Luke 2:51-52- Jesus' experience of family.
FAMILY-
- is the first and vital cell of society
- a community of persons serving life through procreation and education (towards the development of society)
- an irreplaceable school in developing, guarding and transmitting the social virtues and values of respect (our families as ROOT and WINGS)
- therefore it rightfully stands at the Head of neighbor-oriented commandments
